English 10
Instructor: Ms. Hoppe
English 10A is a required five-credit semester course that fulfills the college and tenth grade graduation requirements for English. In the 10th grade, students enhance their analytical and interpretive skills through learning about tonal analysis in literary and expository text. Students will further develop their composition skills to include analysis of two works of literature. Furthermore, students will expand their research and presentation skills through original research projects including short, documented essays.

10th Grade Theme: Man and Society: the effects of language, media, and propaganda on our world view.
Literary Focus: Compare and contrast authors’ style choices, which reflect their attitude towards their subject, audience or theme. Examine the effects of propaganda, rhetorical devices, diction and figurative language on the individual in a social context.
Essential Question for 10th Grade: Since 9th grade focused on the self, 10th grade expands the discussion of man’s duty to others. How are we molded, persuaded, motivated by language? How do we convey our world view to others? What role does language play in affecting political and social norms? How is the individual’s value system affected by his social and political context? What role does media, propaganda, and political discourse play in determining one’s relationship with and duty to his fellow man? When does an individual re-assess his relationship with his society? At what price does one stand against the masses?

Class Announcements
End of the Year
I want to take a moment to thank you for your hard work this year.  I was both impressed and humbled by the growth and development demonstrated in your Finals.  You should be VERY proud of your accomplishments this year.  I have stolen some of them to use as future models; if you object, you will have to come back to get it. :)

F451 Essays
I have finished grading and entering scores for the F451 essays that were submitted electronically. (The tone analysis scores have also been entered.) As announced in class, I am unable to shuffle papers back and forth with my back injury.  I will grade those papers submitted as paper copies when we return to school on Tuesday.
Letter to Your English Teacher (for next year)
Write a letter of introduction for your portfolio. Use the Business Letter format.

1) Paragraph 1: Introduce yourself.  How would you describe your personality? In what are you interested? How do you spend your time? What is a typical day like for you?

2) Paragraph 2: Discuss strengths and positive experiences. What activities or assignments have you enjoyed? What are your strengths in English class?

3) Paragraph 3: Acknowledge needs and weaknesses. With what have you struggled? Are there certain types of assignments that are more difficult for you? What can you do to improve this year? What can your teacher do to help you? What other resources do you have to support you?

4) Paragraph 4: Form a Plan.  What are your goals for this new school year?  Set two specific, measurable goals for yourself in regards to English class.

5) Thank your reader for their time.

6) Include a business letter closing.

Section 1 Reading Quiz
You have until Tuesday to finish the Reading Comprehension quiz for section one. As long as you read, it should prove easy breezy.  You'll have 60 seconds to answer each question.
Blogging
Make sure you read over your peers' comments prior to posting your own response.  Comments posted this week that are redundant, and repeat the same ideas already posted by others, will be deleted.

I am also going back through your posts at random and noting errors.  Keep in mind that no one knows who you are, and yet everyone can benefit and grow from seeing these revision recommendations and trying to fix the errors.  Again, I recommend typing your answers in Word first so that you have some assistance with proofreading. :)
